broadway swings at christmas
Dunfermline’s Alhambra has reached an important milestone with a year, 18,000 customers and a string of plaudits since the launch of the campaign to launch the venue last December. It all began with an opening party and an open doors day. A year later and the venue, although still very much in the process of being restored, is unrecognisable from the shell inherited from Carlton Bingo.
To celebrate the first year many of those involved in a ‘spine-tingling’ first night, including West End star Jeff Leyton and the Razz Big Band, return to perform a show called Broadway Swings. This is a programme of swing versions of broadway tunes made famous by Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Michael Buble that sold out one of te largest venues at the Fringe earlier this year.
Owner of the venue Bill Fletcher is satisfied with progress so far. ‘The first year has surpassed our expectations, we have enjoyed fantastic local support, lots of sol-out shows and it is gratifying to see up to a third of our audience coming over to Dunfermline from Edinburgh, it is nice to see it that way round for a change’.
The venue is also proving popular with performers, all the acts who have appeared so far are keen to return and K T Tunstall, who performed a sensational ‘homecoming’ gig there before T in the Park, applauded it as her favourite Scottish venue.
In addition to Broadway Swings, December sees much anticipated shows by Ocean Colour Scene and Biffy Clyro. The new year brings even more treats with The Enemy (where the Alhambra was one of the UK’s fastest selling venues), Jimmy Carr and The Australian Pink Floyd who usually play venues on the scale of the SECC.
Rather than resting ion their laurels, Bill Fletcher is keen to see the Alhambra build on their promising start. ‘Our aim is to become not only Fife’s premier theatre but also one of the best in the East of Scotland. It has come a long way from the old bingo hall we inherited, but with continued local support, we believe the venue will continue to thrive’.
