David Wood, the UK’s premier children’s playwright (The Gingerbread Man, The BFG, The Tiger Who Came To Tea, Meg and Mog Show) has taken Eric Hill’s characters and woven them into a bright and colourful , musical entertainment that both educates and entertains. It is the perfect introduction to theatre for young children. This musical play premieres David Wood’s re-working of his original production of Spot’s Birthday Party.

“Come dressed for a party”, the invite – sorry, the tickets, read. And what a party it was. David Wood’s (The BFG, The Tiger Who Came To Tea) adaptation of Eric Hill’s original story of Spot’s Birthday Party was a colourful and engaging piece of musical theatre for the under-fives.

Spot’s friends Tom (the crocodile), Helen (the hippo) and Steve (the monkey) joined Spot’s mum and dad in their search for the playful puppy, before presenting him with their birthday presents. Spot’s mum got a present too – a brush with which to sweep up all the party mess. Quite.

The show is threaded together by magical party entertainer Marco (the rabbit), who invites the audience to join in with the music and songs, and confident vocals from the cast made this highly polished stage show a pleasant experience for the adults too.
Song and dance moves were toe-tapping, but simple enough to have children bopping along in the aisles. The show’s hour-long running time and 11.30am showing was perfect timing for our two critics, aged two and four (and just long enough for the adults too). Twenty years after it was created, it’s easy to see why Spot’s Birthday Party is a children’s classic. It’s a phantasmagorical feast that gets their grey cells working, along with their creative and interactive tendencies, and you’ll be talking about it (whether you want to or not) for the rest of the week.” - The Sunday Business Post ****
