Tam O’ Shanter
Created and directed by Gerry Mulgrew
Tam O’Shanter is a wild night out. Based on the famous poem, it also incorporates other Burns’ material such as The Vision, The Cottar’s Saturday Night, Halloween, and The Holy Fair. Included in the choric romp is the libretto of The Jolly Beggars - Burn’s great cantata, his hymn to liberty, and the nearest he ever got to writing a piece overtly for the theatre. We see the tale of Tam O’Shanter - his drunken and glorious night out, his ride through the storm, the scene of supernatural debauchery inside Kirk Alloway, and the terrifying chase through the woods. It is set within the wider story of the Ayrshire community of Burns’ time, and it’s rhythm of work, life, courtship, entertainment, ritual, and death. With over twenty songs, live music, a strong visual style and a large cast of the best Scottish actors, dancers and musicians, this is an evening of outrageous hilarity, death-defying rhyming, anachronisms and short skirts.
Government Warning: This show may be nuts and contain laughter in excessive doses.
